PETER M. SWEENY, ESQUIRE Peter M. Sweeny is the author of the Virginia Workers' Compensation Case Finder, 3rd Ed., published by LexisNexis. The Case Finder is used as a reference tool by the Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission and by workers compensation attorneys and insurance companies throughout the state. Mr. Sweeny has been practicing workers' compensation in Virginia for over 27 years and has frequently lectured attorneys and others on workers' compensation issues. He is also the author of "Avoiding The Pitfalls Of Vocational Rehabilitation In Virginia Workers' Compensation Cases" published in the Journal of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, Volume 116, No. 2 (Spring, 2004). After graduating from Georgetown University with a B.A. in history and from Seton Hall University with a J.D. in 1974, Mr. Sweeny began his legal career working on the legal staff of the Chairman of the Occupational Safety & Health Review Commission. After leaving government service Mr. Sweeny joined the Washington, D.C. law firm of Ashcraft & Gerel where he became a partner in 1985. In 1986 Mr. Sweeny co-founded Thacher, Swiger, Sweeny & Day in Fairfax, Virginia. In 1989 Mr. Sweeny opened his own firm and currently practices as a solo practioner in Leesburg, Virginia with a statewide workers' compensation practice. Mr. Sweeny has been a member of the Virginia State Bar since 1976, a member of the District of Columbia Bar since 1978, and a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States since 1979. He is also admitted to the United States District Court, Eastern District; the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; the United States District Court for the District of Columbia; and the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Mr. Sweeny is a member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and served as the first Chairman of the Workers' Compensation Section (1997-1998). Mr. Sweeny was appointed to the Advisory Committee of the Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission from 1983-1984. He has been listed in Marquis Who's Who in American Law, 4th Ed. and 15th Ed. and is rated "AV" by Martindale-Hubbell, appearing in their Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. Mr. Sweeny also serves on Larson's National Workers' Compensation Advisory Board through LexisNexis and was selected as a Workers' Compensation Notable Person in 2009. He is a Diplomate of the Court Practice Institute. Mr. Sweeny has published articles on Virginia workers' compensation and teaches Continuing Legal Education seminars in his field. While focusing his practice on Virginia workers' compensation, Mr. Sweeny has tried personal injury cases, a medical malpractice case and products liability cases in the Federal and Virginia Courts in Northern Virginia. He has successfully argued numerous appeals before the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals of Virginia as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. |
